About

My name is Alfonso Diaz. I grew up in Asturias, an area of spectacular green valleys in the north of Spain, where the predominately rural farming community still uses scythes nearly year round.

I started mowing with a scythe on my family’s farm when I was about 8 or 9 years old. It was a retired 24” Bellota. I helped my father mow hay and grass for our cows, clear brush and maintain the fields throughout the year.YQ4-1234108 - © - Alberto F. Ardisana

In my county, (Onis), every year they celebrate the end of the mowing season—the last weekend of August.  Among numerous rural contests are the showcase mowing and peening competitions. The first time I participated I was 14 years old, and I have participated over the years since then–even winning a few mowing and peening contests. Currently I live in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic area.

  1. Dear Alfonso,
It’s great to find another blog about the pleasures of working with the scythe. I have been mowing and teaching in the UK for 10 years now and still love the work and learn each time I use it.
I’m interested to find out more about the Sega Jokoa in the Basque area of Spain. I’d like to see the competitions and if possible scythe with some local farmers. Do you have any information about the locations and dates of the games?
    Many thanks and best wishes,
    Steve Tomlin

    • Steve,

I asked http://www.almitza.com about their events for 2014 and I am waiting for answer.. Also it looks like the European competition for 2015 will be in the basque area on August 28, 29 and 30.

I will keep an eye also on the same type of events in Asturias, Cantabria and Leon, all North of Spain but their schedule is nor ready yet.

      Stay Sharp my friend
      Alfonso

      Alfonso
